2 of NY Pacers’ permanent members, Atiq and Dipon are not playing the 1st game on May 16th. Dipon needs to rest couple of weeks more for the muscle spasm he picked up in his leg about a month ago. He is undergoing a therapy now and hoping to be fit by May 30th. For Atiq it might be little longer to be back, as he was injured pretty badly in the six-a-side tournament, that needed some stitches. Also because of his job he is travelling every week, which gives him only 2 days to spend with his family, so for him situation is little trickier. But hopefully he’ll join us, if not permanently, but whenever he can.

Team manager confirmed today that there won’t be any game on Memorial Day weekend. Thanks a bunch to BCANA. So everyone in the team; management, players, and of course stuff reporter (that would be me) can start making vacation plans for that long weekend. ENJOY!!!

So finally the schedule for the BCANA league is out, to be precise partial schedule. And guess what?! We are playing in the inaugural game of the tournament. Opponent is Jamaica Youth Club, in short JYC. As their name says, this team is full of young people. I’m guessing their average age would be 21, 22. And what is our team’s average age? Ahem, let’s not get in there. J

The game is scheduled to begin @ 11.30 am in Kissena field. It’s the same field we played in six-a-side tournament. NY Pacers team management and players cordially inviting their relatives, friends, supporters to come to the field and cheer for their loved (or not so loved) ones.

NY Pacers recruited 3 young players, Porag, Rusho, and Ashique. They’ve been practicing with the team last couple of weeks. Porag and Rusho also played in six-a-side tournament. After seeing their dedication and passion towards the game, their positive attitude about the team, management decided to make them permanent members. They come with versatile qualities; Porag is a medium fast bowler and excellent fielder, Rusho is a batsman, also has the capability to become a wicket keeper and Ashique is an all-rounder. Welcome aboard Guys.

Atiq’s Accident:

In the 4th (and last) game of the six-a-side tournament an accident struck the team. NY Pacers was batting 1st against JYC. Atiq was on the crease, facing the last ball of the innings, he tried to cut the ball to his leg, but ball hit the top corner of the bat and went up and hit his chin very hard. He felt the pain but he still went for a run, once he reached other end, he took his helmet off, and realized he was bleeding. He came back to the pavilion, blood was all over his shirt and trousers and it was still dripping, like water drips from a broken tap. Others tried to hold napkins, tissues on the spot but bleeding didn’t stop. Then he was taken to nearest hospital (Queens Hospital) by Dipon. Atiq’s loving wife Rimi accompanied them. Over there doctor gave him 6 stitches.

In the meantime game went on with Porag as substitute for Atiq and NY Pacers lost. All the team members and supporters then waited in the field to find out what happened to Atiq. They were worried and sad. The irony of this is he is the 1 person who was very vocal about safety from day one. He is like, “You wanna have fun? Go ahead, but don’t jeopardize with safety. Take all the precaution you can take”. And then this happens to him. After about an hour Atiq came back with a huge bandage on his chin, and he calmed everyone with big smile on his face. That man is a fighter. Hope he will recover soon and will be able to join rest of the team for practice ASAP.

Dew in for 6-a-side tournament:

To fill up the vacuum Dipon has left in the team, team’s treasurer Mamun contacted Dew, and was able to manage him to play in the six-a-side tournament tomorrow. Understanding the situation Dew said YES, even though he had work. It’ll be a huge moral booster for the team. He is an excellent medium fast bowler and also an hard hitting opening batsman.

Dipon’s Injury:

Just 2 days before the six-a-side tournament NY pacers heard a bad news that Dipon won’t be able to play in the six-a-side matches. He sustained a muscle spasm in his left leg 3 weeks back while practicing. He took couple of days off from practice; he came back as he felt better. But the pain was coming back every time he practiced. So finally he went to doctor on Thursday, and he was told that he needs to give his legs 3 weeks rest and should not play at all. Since the main league is starting on May 9th and he needs to be ready for that, so he decided to opt out of the 6-a-side tournament.

It is pretty unfortunate for him and for the team, as he is like the backbone of the team. He brought everyone together and founded this team single handedly. Not only is he a talented medium pace bowler also he is a hard hitting batsman, which would’ve helped a lot in a six-a-side match. Not just as a player, but as an inspirational leader, his departure will suffer the team’s spirit. But he will be present in the field and will do everything he can to inspire the team.

Team members decided to dedicate these 4 six-a-side matches to Dipon.

Entry Fee for League Paid:

4 members of the NY Pacers team, Dipon, Mamun, Asif, and Saud; went to BCANA (Bangladesh Cricket Association of North America) office this evening and paid the entry fee for the first division league to Mamun Malik. They also submitted the player list to him. Now it’s official that NY Pacers is playing in 2009 league. Hip Hip Hooray. Best wishes to the team.

Pacers also found out that BCANA is organizing a six-a-side tournament to be played on April 18th. There will be 8 teams playing in the tournament, and BCANA invited Pacers to be 1 of them. After discussing with Captain and Team captain, Dipon gave them verbal approval. Team thinks it’ll be a good practice for them before the real league starts.
